Stocks & Shares ISA

Your tax-free investing wrapper — everything you need to know before choosing a provider

What is a Stocks & Shares ISA?

A Stocks & Shares ISA (Individual Savings Account) is a tax-efficient investment account available to UK residents aged 18 and over. You can invest up to £20,000 per tax year, and everything inside — growth, dividends, and withdrawals — is completely free from UK tax, forever.

Unlike a Cash ISA, a Stocks & Shares ISA lets you hold investments: shares, ETFs, investment trusts, bonds, and funds. The ISA wrapper simply means that whatever your investments earn inside it, HMRC never sees a penny of it.

Why use a Stocks & Shares ISA?

Tax-free growth

All capital gains, dividends, and interest earned inside the ISA are completely exempt from UK tax. No CGT, no income tax on dividends, no limits on how much your pot can grow.

Flexible access

Unlike a pension, you can withdraw your money at any time with no penalty. Your ISA savings are yours to access whenever you need them.

£20,000 annual allowance

You can invest up to £20,000 per tax year across all your ISAs combined. Unused allowance cannot be carried forward — use it or lose it each April.

No minimum income

There is no income or employment requirement to open a Stocks & Shares ISA. Anyone aged 18 or over who is a UK resident can open one.

Who is it best suited for?

A Stocks & Shares ISA is the natural first stop for most UK investors. It is particularly well suited to:

  • Investors with a 5+ year time horizon who can ride out short-term market volatility
  • People who want flexible access to their money before retirement age (unlike a pension, there is no minimum access age)
  • Higher earners who want to shelter investment returns from CGT and dividend tax
  • Anyone building long-term wealth outside of their workplace pension

What to look for in a provider

Not all ISA providers are equal. When comparing platforms, consider:

Platform feeMost providers charge an annual percentage of your portfolio (typically 0.15%–0.45%) or a flat monthly fee. The difference compounds significantly over 20+ years.
Fund rangeDo they offer the ETFs and index funds you want to hold? Most providers offer the major global index funds, but ranges vary.
Dealing chargesSome platforms charge per trade, others offer free dealing. For regular monthly investors, dealing charges matter more than the annual fee.
Mobile app qualityIf you plan to check your portfolio regularly, the app experience matters.
FCA authorisationAlways verify the provider is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority before opening an account.
